Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was the general of the confederate army (south). He was the greatest general in the South during the Civil War. He graduated from West Point Military Academy and became a colonel in the army before the Civil War started. He was born in Virginia and decided to fight on the side of the confederates even though president Lincoln asked him to be the commander of the union army. But he wanted to stay loyal to his home state and decided to refuse president Lincoln's offer.
He was a fierce fight and helped the South win many battles at the beginning of the Civil War, yet the union army was bigger and stronger. Lee felt that he had to surrender to the union army for the lives of his soldiers.
